3 Advocacy Actions You Can Take for World Malaria Day (April 25)

April 23, 2024

Dear United to Beat Malaria Champions:

April 25 is World Malaria Day, and we have three (3) quick-and-easy advocacy actions you can take to raise awareness and ask your policymakers to support strong funding for programs working across the globe to end malaria.

Action #1: Follow this script to call your three members of Congress and ask them to support strong funding for programs including the President’s Malaria Initiative, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria, CDC, UNICEF, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. The whole process should take you just a few minutes to complete your three calls and can make a big difference in the lives of people in malaria-endemic countries! You can also tell your network to text “MALARIA” to 30644 to receive the script right to their phones — we encourage you to invite your community to take action with us by calling their policymakers this week!

Additional Instructions:

  • Be prepared for your calls by looking up who represents you in Congress at Congress.gov make sure you are asking for the appropriate offices!
  • Each person should make three calls total. You will call the Capitol Hill Switchboard (1-844-977-2201), and after a brief message from United to Beat Malaria, you will be connected to an operator who will ask how they can help you. You should ask to speak to your first Senator, and provide their name. The operator will connect you, you will leave your message, hang up, and repeat the process two more times to reach your two senators and one representative.
  • Be prepared with the names of your three members of Congress and your zip code. The operator will connect you to that office to speak with a staff member or leave a message.
  • Feel free to review this training and example call which walks you through the script and the process of calling your MOCs.
  • Be sure to record your action in STAR at the end of your 3 calls so we can keep track of your efforts!
  • If you call during office hours (Typically 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.), you will speak to a staffer directly. If you call after-hours, you can leave a voicemail. Instructions for a live call or a voicemail are included in the Conversation Guide.
  • Aim to make your calls on April 25, but any time between 4/22-4/26 works well!

Action #2: Click here to post on Twitter/X and automatically tag your members of Congress! Simply fill out the linked form, and it will populate three X posts, directed at your two senators and one representative. Just click “Tweet” three times to post your messages on social media!

Action #3: Sign our petition and share the link with five friends to maximize your impact!

Here are the slides and recording from our April 22 webinar for anyone who missed it.

Thank you for taking this action to support the fight against malaria! Please reach out to Maegan Cross at [email protected] with any questions!
