Lyon, France, October 10, 2019 – Today members of the global community gathered in Lyon, France to pledge resources for the Sixth Replenishment of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, seeking a targeted investment of at least US$14 billion over the next three-year period.
“The global community convened today in Lyon, France to begin the Sixth Replenishment of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria;” said the United Nations Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign Executive Director, Margaret Reilly McDonnell. “We are thankful for the contributions of the French government in hosting this successful Replenishment conference.”
Historic pledge increases and numerous new donors stepping up the fight helped the Global Fund reach a total pledge amount of US$13.92 billion, with additional pledges expected to be made by the end of 2019 to reach at least US$14 billion. Critical commitments from the private sector, totaling nearly US$1 billion, and a doubling of commitments from African countries helped reach the ambitious target.
Additionally, a delegation of Members of Congress from the United States indicated a commitment of US$1.56 billion to the Global Fund for Fiscal Year 2020, with the intent to commit a total of US$4.68 billion over the next three years.
“Congress has long showed leadership in appropriating funds to allow the Global Fund to achieve the goals set out by the international community,” McDonnell continued. “We are encouraged by both the House and Senate reiterating their specific intention to fund the Global Fund at US$1.56 billion annually and retain a two-to-one spending match throughout the Replenishment cycle, which leverages two dollars from other donors around the world for every U.S. tax-payer dollar. Congressional intent and appropriation speaks volumes to the rest of the Global Fund donor community and the delivery of the US pledge will help get the fights against AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria back on track.
“In addition to thanking Members of Congress for their leadership, Nothing But Nets also wants to express gratitude to our partners and grassroots champions across the United States, who effectively advocated to their elected officials about the importance of these increases for the Global Fund.”
Established in 2002, the Global Fund raises, manages and invests the world’s money to respond to three of the deadliest infectious diseases the world has ever known. By mobilizing and investing more than US$4 billion a year to support programs run by local experts in more than 100 countries, the Global Fund partnership has saved 32 million lives and reduced deaths related to HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria by 40 percent.

About Nothing But Nets
Nothing But Nets is a global grassroots campaign to raise awareness, funds, and voices to fight malaria. In 2006, sports columnist Rick Reilly wrote a column in Sports Illustrated challenging each of his readers to donate at least $10 to send insecticide-treated bed nets to protect families from malaria-carrying mosquitoes. Since then, with the help of our partners and supporters, Nothing But Nets has raised over $70 million to help deliver 13 million bed nets to families in need, along with other crucial malaria interventions like diagnostics, treatment, and training of healthcare workers.
