All You Have to Do is Ask

Nothing But Nets has evolved significantly over the last 15 years to step up the fight against malaria. This evolution includes supporting malaria elimination efforts in Latin America and the Caribbean, a robust and influential network of advocates, and adopting an intervention agnostic approach. One thing that hasn’t changed is that we are still a grassroots campaign powered by generous donors, supporters, and corporate and organizational partners that create impact and save lives in the fight against malaria.

Since 2017, Aptive Environmental has embraced this grassroots approach by engaging their full community of sales reps and customers to step up to address malaria in an innovative and impactful way. Through a door-to-door approach to pest control sales, Aptive representatives give customers the opportunity to donate to Nothing But Nets when they sign up for Aptive’s pest control service. In the last three years, over 70,000 Aptive customers have contributed amounts ranging from $1 to $200. In total, the Aptive community has raised over $700,000 since 2017. This innovative fundraising model has empowered incredible generosity and means that over 230,000 people can have a safe night’s sleep protected from malaria.

Last month, I had the opportunity to talk with Aptive’s leading sales rep for customer donations, Jake West. Jake worked out of the Ft. Lauderdale, FL Aptive branch and raised over $3,500 this summer, besting his company-leading $2,300 in 2019.

Jake’s big secret to success? Just ask. “All you have to do is ask. Give everyone the opportunity to give back and do something good. After every sale I would just ask – do you want to add a one-time donation?” And ask he did. Out of 1,000 new customers, 400 made a donation with the 400th coming on his last day of the year.

Each summer Jake is one of hundreds of Aptive reps in 43 markets around the country putting in miles and making the asks to raise awareness for Nothing But Nets and the fight against malaria. By combining an innovative fundraising model with a grassroots, door-to-door approach, Aptive has found a new way to expand Nothing But Nets’ community of supporters and save lives.
