Senate Bill Includes Increased Funding for Malaria Programs and other Areas of Global Health, International Affairs

On Monday, the Senate Appropriations Committee released the Chairman’s Mark for the Fiscal Year 2022 (FY22) State and Foreign Operations bill. The Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations, chaired by Senator Chris Coons (D-DE), included significant funding increases for international affairs and malaria programming. As the Global Fund is currently in its final year of the Sixth Replenishment, the Subcommittee provided flat funding to ensure the partnership could meet its goal of $14 billion over the three year cycle. Significantly, the bill included an increase for the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) from $770 million in FY21 to $800 million for FY22. This investment would allow PMI to address pressing obstacles in the fight against malaria including drug and insecticide resistance, the training of additional health workers, and responding to the impacts of COVID-19. The House and Senate will meet later this year to negotiate the parameters of the final FY22 Appropriations package.
