A bat mitzvah to save lives

June 15, 2017

A dedicated Nothing But Nets supporter from the Union for Reform Judaism used her traditional Jewish coming of age celebration to raise money for anti-malarial bed nets. Naomi Keren Black, a thirteen year old girl from Australia, asked for donations to Nothing But Nets in lieu of Bat Mitzvah gifts.

To promote her efforts, Naomi created a Bat Mitzvah webpage that highlights her life and the special celebration that took place on December 27, 2008.

On the homepage of her personal site, Naomi asked family and friends to support the Nothing But Nets project, sharing how a $10 bed net can reduce death from malaria by 90 percent. She says, “It will be amazing to know that by celebrating my Bat Mitzvah a child’s life has been saved! On behalf of the families who will benefit without knowing you, or me – many thanks!” To learn more about Naomi and view her photos, check out the website she created at http://www.naomi.id.au/page1.php.

Naomi’s admirable request for her Bat Mitzvah celebration raised over $2,000 in donations for Nothing But Nets. What an inspiring way to help save lives! Congratulations Naomi – we hope the Bat Mitzvah was a memorable and special time!
