A Good Week for Long-Lasting Insecticide-Treated Nets

Two reports released last week underscore the importance of using long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) to fight malaria. First, the United Nations and Kenyan government reported that nets are saving children’s lives in Kenya. Just five years ago, only 5% of Kenyan children were sleeping under nets. 13.4 million LLINs later, the Kenyan Minister of Health reported that nets have reduced children’s deaths in malaria risk areas by 44%.

Also last week the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended that all people at risk of malaria be covered by LLINs, noting that use of these nets reduces malaria infections by 50% on average, and are “one of the most cost effective interventions against malaria.” WHO also said that when purchased through the public sector LLINs should be highly subsidized or free.

As you all know very well – this is exactly what we are doing!
