Welcome to the Campaign Quarterly Newsletter, a snapshot of our work at Nothing But Nets and the global movement to end malaria for good.

In this issue: the incredible journeys of three refugee mothers, a hero’s welcome in Taiwan for a young malaria champion, and a pest-control company whose customers raised over $250,000 for Nothing But Nets.

They fled, with children in tow, carrying with them little more than memories of violence and persecution. Three mothers – Nyapeni, Jacqueline, and Mukabera – walked for days with their children to reach refugee camps, only to face a threat of a different kind. 

Malaria is often the leading cause of death in refugee settlements throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. But thanks to supporters like you, these mothers each received insecticide-treated bed nets that protect their entire family from the disease. In partnership with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), Nothing But Nets has distributed millions of bed nets to refugee settlements.

Taiwanese President Tsai-Ing-wen invited Katherine Commale, a 17-year-old Nothing But Nets champion, to receive the nation’s “Hero Award” and deliver a speech to an audience of 3,000 children. In Taiwan, her story is well-known. She’s featured in a book – Hero 365 – that is required reading for elementary school students. In addition to receiving the Hero Award, Katherine was also named Taiwan’s Global Charity Ambassador. 

This is the latest chapter in a 12-year journey for Katherine, who launched her first fundraiser for Nothing But Nets when she was five years old. She has since raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to protect families from malaria; and has inspired countless others to join her in this fight.

Private companies are invaluable partners to non-profit organizations – and Aptive Environmental is the perfect example. As a committed Nothing But Nets partner since 2010, Aptive Environmental has helped us protect thousands of families from malaria around the world.

Malaria Crisis in South Sudan
More than 1 million South Sudanese refugees have fled to Uganda. More than 85% of these refugees are women and children under the age of 18, who are most vulnerable to malaria. We need to send thousands of bed nets to South Sudan in partnership with UNICEF. Give today.

Eliminating Malaria in Haiti
This month, Malaria Zero is deploying a network of community health workers who will administer diagnostics and treatments in some of the most rural, most at-risk communities in Haiti. In the coming months, we will carry out a wide range of malaria control, prevention, and treatment programs.

2019 NBA Season 

Whether or not you’re a basketball fan, it’s easy to appreciate the contributions that Steph Curry and Anthony Tolliver have made to the fight against malaria. This year alone, Steph launched a bed net fundraiser for his 30th birthday, and also released a limited-edition ‘Nothing But Nets’ Curry 4 Low Colorway sneaker, and donated a bed net for each pair sold. Anthony, meanwhile, will continue to donate a bed net for every 3-pointer made, as part of the 3-for-3 challenge. We wish them the best of luck in the upcoming season!

Global Leadership Dinner & UNF’s Birthday
Nothing But Nets and the rest of the United Nations Foundation will celebrate the organization’s 20th anniversary, as part of UNF’s annual Global Leadership Dinner in New York City. Created from Ted Turner’s historic $1 billion pledge in 1997, UNF has leveraged the gift to invest more than $2 billion in global causes, such as disease prevention, women’s empowerment, and climate change.
