Nothing But Nets is appreciative of the continued broad bipartisan support for programs like the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria (Global Fund). We applaud our congressional leaders, as well as our advocates and partners, who have shone a light on these programs’ incredible lifesaving work and the tangible progress they’re making to tackle malaria and other leading infectious disease threats.
The FY21 funding package included stable funding for both the PMI (funded at $770 million) and the Global Fund (funded at $1.56 billion), which ensures that critical interventions such as bed nets, diagnostics, and treatment continue to reach communities in need. The Global Fund recently announced that it signed a record number of grants to address HIV/AIDS, TB and, malaria, and to strengthen systems for health. However, the recent appropriations agreement did not provide additional funds for either program for the response to COVID-19, which has the capacity to upend the gains the global community has made against malaria over the last two decades.
Looking forward, we’re eager to work with the 117th Congress and the Biden-Harris Administration to ensure that we have an effective global response to COVID-19 and that we continue making progress towards ending malaria in our lifetime.
