In honor of the 19th anniversary of the Nothing But Nets article, we are excited to announce Maya Monroe as the winner of the third annual Rick Reilly Award. The Rick Reilly Award is given each year to a United to Beat Malaria supporter who has helped raise awareness and support for the fight against malaria through creative and active engagement strategies.
Maya Monroe, who grew up in professional basketball, is an advocate for using sport to highlight gender and health inequities. Over the past two years, Maya has helped cultivate a community of athletes fighting to beat malaria, honoring Rick’s original call to action in the Sports Illustrated article. Thanks to her passion to create a healthier, more equitable world, she has helped United to Beat Malaria connect with and cultivate a number of collegial and professional athletes, such as Jeremiah Nyarko, a forward at Stony Brook University; Laeticia Amihere, a WNBA forward for the Golden State Valkyries; and Calvin Anderson, a NFL offensive lineman with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
We hope you join us in celebrating Maya.
