Today is World Malaria Day, an annual observance highlighting the successes reached to end malaria and continued innovation needed to accelerate progress.
Our collaboration with award-winning pest control expert Aptive Environmental is just one example of how partnerships can help protect families, particularly young children and women, from deadly symptoms of malaria. Aptive’s dedication to creating safe and comfortable spaces, homes, and neighborhoods is not only seen through solving pest problems for half a million homes across the United States, but through their longtime support of the campaign for the past eight years.
Progress in Malaria Prevention
Since 2000, the malaria death rate has been cut in half — with 2.2 billion cases and 12.7 million deaths prevented — thanks to global collaboration between endemic and donor countries, investments in malaria prevention programs and tools, and commitments to strengthen health systems.
History has shown us, though, that the path towards ending malaria won’t be linear. In 2023, the World Health Organization reported that malaria infected approximately 263 million people and killed 597,000 people around the world — 74 percent of those lives lost being children under five years old. Despite an increase in malaria cases, deaths have declined, keeping us on track towards malaria elimination if we maintain investments in fighting this deadly disease.
These global efforts are not done in silos. It takes cross-sector partnerships from all industries to sustain progress against a tricky creature like the malaria-transmitting mosquito (which has shown resistance to insecticides commonly used in bed nets and indoor residual sprays, two key prevention tools). Intervention products from manufacturing companies, investments from governments, research from leading institutions, advocacy from civil society groups, and much more all work together to create eradication solutions that save lives across the globe.
Partnering to Beat Malaria
Aptive and Beat Malaria collaborate on fundraising initiatives that help to ensure vulnerable communities can access quality health services, antimalarials, and treatment in some of the hardest-to-reach areas in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. From hosting basketball challenges with the Utah Jazz to, most recently, generating donations for World Mosquito Day, Aptive is a committed partner in the fight to beat malaria.
“At Aptive the core of what we strive to do is provide peace of mind to our customers by keeping their homes pest free,” said Aptive Co-Founder and CEO Vess Pearson. “When we heard about United to Beat Malaria and their work to provide peace of mind to parents and children in malaria-infested regions of the world — we knew they were the perfect organization to partner with. We look forward to continuing our work with United to Beat Malaria for many years to come and are proud to be part of their accomplishments.”
Partnerships are at the heart of Beat Malaria’s mission to keep families across the globe, and here at home, safe from deadly diseases. This World Malaria Day, we invite you to join our campaign.
