April 25th is World Malaria Day, a day that recognizes global efforts to control malaria. In the past 25 years, 45 countries and 1 territory have eliminated malaria. Global malaria programs have averted 2.2 billion malaria cases and prevented 12.7 million malaria deaths.
But we are at a crossroads. Although malaria deaths have declined steadily year over year, 2023 saw more malaria cases than pre-pandemic levels. It’s time to “Reinvest, Reimagine, and Reignite” to protect these hard-`won achievements and unlock new potential, innovate for impact, and renew our commitment to malaria elimination.
Malaria programs do more than save lives. They safeguard American health by preventing imported cases of malaria and potential outbreaks on U.S. soil. More than 30 states have mosquitoes capable of spreading malaria, and 2023 marked the first domestic malaria transmission in 30 years in Florida, Texas, and Maryland.
