RBM Partnership to End Malaria

RBM is the world’s largest platform for developing a coordinated global response against malaria. Founded in 1998 by the World Health Organization and other UN agencies, RBM is comprised of over 500 partners – from community health worker groups and researchers developing new tools, to malaria-affected and donor countries, businesses and international organizations. United to Beat Malaria actively participates in RBM’s communications, advocacy, and resource mobilization-focused committees.

Further, United to Beat Malaria provides funding and technical expertise to RBM’s Alliance for Malaria Prevention (AMP), an alliance of more than 40 partners committed to expanding the ownership and use of insecticide-treated bed nets (ITN’s) as part of an integrated malaria elimination strategy. AMP partners assist and advocate for country-specific support to plan and implement both mass and continuous ITN distributions, and to mobilize resources should gaps in ITNs or operational costs occur.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Guided by the belief that every life has equal value, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation works to help all people lead healthy, productive lives. From 1999-2019, the foundation invested $2.9 billion in malaria programs, along with billions more invested in The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria. These investments were a key catalyst for the scale-up in global commitment and cooperation that drove down malaria cases and deaths considerably this century.

Further, the foundation remains committed to supporting research and development of innovations that accelerate progress towards malaria eradication; while also supporting advocacy efforts – including the United to Beat Malaria Champions Council — to ensure strong, sustained support for critical global malaria programs.

Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria

The Global Fund is the world’s largest financier of malaria, AIDS, and TB prevention, treatment, and care programs. As a partnership between governments, civil society, the private sector and people affected by the diseases, the Global Fund mobilizes and invests nearly US$4 billion a year to support programs run by local experts in countries and communities most in need. Founded in 2002, Global Fund investments have saved 32 million lives and provided prevention, treatment and care services to hundreds of millions of people.

Recognizing the critical importance of Global Fund programs, United to Beat Malaria has built a coalition of 600+ champions who advocate for strong sustained funding for the Global Fund. In 2019, our Champions Council helped secure a historic $210 million increase for The Global Fund that will will impact millions of lives over the next three years.

President’s Malaria Initiative

As a global leader in the fight against malaria, the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) optimizes and scales up proven malaria interventions, such as insecticide-treated nets, indoor residual spraying, diagnostic tools, and lifesaving medicines. PMI catalyzes its commodity investments with technical and operational assistance to generate even more impact. Launched in 2000, PMI supports 24 partner countries in sub-Saharan Africa and three programs in the Greater Mekong Subregion in Southeast Asia to control and eliminate malaria. In countries where PMI works, there has been a 60% decline in malaria death rates. Recognizing the critical importance of Global Fund programs, United to Beat Malaria Champions Council advocates for strong sustained funding for PMI.

World Health Organization

The UN’s World Health Organization (WHO) is responsible for providing leadership on global health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and standards, providing technical support to countries and monitoring health trends. The WHO’s broad mandate includes advocating for universal healthcare, monitoring public health risks, coordinating responses to health emergencies, and promoting human health and well being. It provides technical assistance to countries, sets international health standards and guidelines, and collects data on global health issues through the World Health Survey.

Every year, the WHO publishes the World Malaria Report to share data on the impact of malaria prevention/treatment interventions, as well as point out the remaining gaps to fill in order to reach the global goal of ending malaria within this generation.

Pan-American Health Organization

PAHO is a UN public health agency with over 100 years of experience working to improve health and living standards for the people of the Americas. PAHO works to strengthen health systems across PAHO’s 35 Member States and improve the health of the peoples of the Americas, in collaboration with Ministries of Health, other government and international agencies, NGO’s, community groups, and many others. Based in Washington DC, PAHO has 27 country offices and nine scientific centers.

United to Beat Malaria and the UN Foundation have worked closely with PAHO to execute malaria prevention, treatment, and elimination programs throughout the Americas, including Haiti, Ecuador, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic.

UNICEF

Founded in 1946, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) works in the world’s toughest places to reach the most disadvantaged children and adolescents – and to protect the rights of every child, everywhere. One of the world’s largest providers of vaccines, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, safe water and sanitation, quality education and skill building, HIV prevention and treatment for mothers and babies, and the protection of children and adolescents from violence and exploitation. Before, during and after humanitarian emergencies, UNICEF is on the ground, bringing life-saving help and hope to children and families.

United to Beat Malaria and UNICEF began working together in 2006 on the campaign’s very first project and continue to partner in malaria-endemic communities across Africa to protect families from this deadly disease, with priority placed on the most vulnerable population: young children.

UNHCR

Established in 1950, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is a UN agency mandated to aid and protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities, and stateless people, and to assist in their voluntary repatriation, local integration or resettlement to a third country. UNHCR delivers emergency assistance; helps safeguard fundamental human rights; helps displaced populations find safe places to live; and works to ensure that stateless people are granted a nationality. As of 2019, UNHCR works in 126 countries, providing protection and assistance to nearly 59 million refugees, returnees, internally displaced and stateless people.

Protecting displaced people from malaria is a key priority for UNHCR, since approximately 60% of the total displaced population settles in malaria-endemic regions. UNHCR first partnered with United to Beat Malaria in 2008; and together we have provided malaria prevention and treatment to over 5 million displaced people in 23 countries (as of 2020).

The MENTOR Initiative

Established in 2002, The MENTOR Initiative is a discrete and agile humanitarian organisation purpose built to relieve human suffering from tropical diseases. We act in some of the world’s most austere and vulnerable communities, who are often devastated and forgotten. Regardless of race, creed or nationality, MENTOR strives to deliver disease control to populations at greatest risk of suffering and death. Collaborating with communities, health workers, health authorities and international organizations, MENTOR leaves a lasting impact by providing effective disease control surveillance, preventative and curative services, and targeted operational research.

MENTOR first partnered with United to Beat Malaria in 2008 and has worked with our campaign in a variety of humanitarian settings, providing rapid-response malaria interventions to some of the most vulnerable communities and populations.
