Tomorrow families across Côte d’Ivoire will begin to participate in the national integrated health campaign. Children under the age of five will receive measles vaccines, Vitamin A supplements, de-worming medicine, and a life-saving bed net to prevent malaria.

Starting tomorrow, more than one million life-saving bed nets will begin to be distributed in Côte d’Ivoire as a part of a national integrated health campaign. And here in Dabou, just 40km west of Abidjan, the anticipation is high!

A man stopped me on the road today and asked me a very simple question, “C’est gratuit?” Is it free? He was referring to the children’s health campaign that was taking place behind us at the market in the center of Monga, Côte d’Ivoire, a small village over an hour from Abidjan.

Of all the precious things I saw today (and there are many) my favorite has to be the little girl in the pink dress who was showing her blue pinky nail to all the other little children around her.

Dorcass is a community health volunteer. She has been working 8-10 hour days this week in Grand Bassam to distribute bed nets to hundreds and thousands of children.

The small village of Mondoukou is roughly 10-15km outside of Grand Bassam, a bustling town that was actually at one point the colonial capital of Côte d’Ivoire. Buildings erected in the 19th century still stand in Grand Bassam, long abandoned by the French colonists on account of, none other than, malaria.
