Raising Africa’s Voice in the Fight Against Malaria

In 2004, I travelled with my band to Gabon for a concert. When we returned to our home in South Africa, my dear friend and fellow band member, Phumzile Ntuli, became very ill. We didn’t quite know what was wrong. No one knew that Phumzile had contracted malaria while traveling on tour. A short time later, on June 23, 2004, Phumzile fell into a coma and tragically died from the disease.

Honoring Our Unsung Leaders: Children

June 16 is the International Day of the African Child — called “Youth Day” in South Africa. Thirty-five years ago today, hundreds of young black children were killed or injured by police as they peacefully marched through the streets of Soweto, South Africa to demand improved education standards and the right to be taught in their own language.

Teen Getting a ‘New Look’ or Changing Detroit for the Better

The recent high-school graduate (Detroit Country Day – yowza! on a nice scholarship) has raised money for the Nothing But Nets campaign to send bed nets to Africa to prevent the spread of Malaria. When the earthquake shattered Haiti, the Detroit-born Atif raised funds through his school and neighborhood.

Schoening’s record benefits ‘Nothing but Nets’ malaria prevention

We all know Bill Schoening for his strong work as the “Voice of the Spurs” on WOAI and the Spurs Radio Network. Schoening is spending some of his free time this summer as he promotes his new career as a budding vocalist. He’s released a compact disc “Second Chance” that will benefit “Nothing but Nets,” an initiative developed to help prevent malaria in Africa.

Cameroon: Send a Net, Save a Life

I recently learned that malaria is the number one cause of death in Cameroon among children under five. Moreover, malaria is now responsible for over 40% of deaths in health care facilities across the country. This means that thousands of children — as well as adults — in this West African country die each year from an easily preventable disease.
