Why I Joined the Fight to End Malaria

My involvement with Nothing But Nets first began in 2015 while I was working on the Sustainable Development Goal framework as a member of a Major Group at the United Nations. After the meeting, I continued the conversation with youth, many of whom had been significantly affected by malaria.

Join Nothing But Nets to Help End Malaria!

Not many people realize that 90 percent of deaths from malaria come from sub-Saharan Africa. As the youngest continent, Africa needed a new sense of urgency to combat many of the gaps and challenges it faced, especially malaria.

This conversation led me to look into malaria from a science and global health policy perspective, and indirectly led me to get involved with Nothing But Nets.

Nonprofits and Celebrities Join Forces to Combat HIV and Malaria in Malawi

The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation (ETAF) and the United Nations Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign announced today a partnership to combat HIV and malaria in southern rural Malawi. Actor Scott Wolf, his wife Kelley, and actress Alexandra Daddario traveled there with the two organizations to see first-hand how they are tackling both global health issues.

On World Refugee Day, Nothing But Nets Announces Major Commitment by Sumitomo Chemical Company to Fight Malaria

Today, on World Refugee Day, the United Nations Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign announced a new commitment to fight malaria with Sumitomo Chemical Co., a global leader in innovative vector control and long-standing partner in the fight to end malaria. Sumitomo Chemical has issued a second matching grant challenge to Nothing But Nets supporters: For every life-saving bed net donated by a supporter (up to 350,000 nets), Sumitomo Chemical will match it, for a total of 700,000 nets. Sumitomo Chemical’s commitment to help Nothing But Nets and its UN partners working across sub-Saharan Africa is part of Nothing But Nets’ new “P.L.E.D.G.E. to Protect” two million refugees and displaced individuals from malaria by the end of 2017.

Lessons Learned from the Fight Against Malaria in the Caribbean

The Nothing But Nets team recently traveled to Haiti and the Dominican Republic, which together comprise the island of Hispaniola – the last island in the Caribbean with ongoing malaria transmission. This trip provided an opportunity to see the incredible work being done on the ground by the National Malaria Control Programs in these two countries, with the support of our partners at the United Nations and in the U.S. Government.

From the clinics in Zimbabwe

I had the opportunity today to travel to four health centers in the Manicaland Province of Zimbabwe and support the Zimbabwe Episcopal Area and the Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church to conduct small distributions of long-lasting insecticide treated nets to young children and pregnant women.
