The United Nation Foundation has worked on many worthwhile products, but one of their newest is a virtual reality initiative that it is undertaking as part of its ongoing efforts to eradicate malaria.

Malaria is treatable and preventable. And yet, the World Health Organization reports that almost half the world’s population — 3.2 billion people — are still at risk of contracting the life-threatening disease. At the Disrupt SF Hackathon, a group of teenage girls is gamifying malaria prevention to help halt the spread of the disease. They’re Aruna Prasad, 16, Erin Smith, 16, Kathy Kong, 17, and Lillian Yuan, 17, and they’ve built Mapsquito, a game that educates players about malaria.

Never in a million years did I think I would be so well versed in what a mosquito can do or at the forefront of fighting the world’s oldest disease – malaria. It wasn’t that long ago that malaria almost took my life. I had complications, a rare form of the disease and it wasn’t diagnosed initially – I am so incredibly lucky to be alive today.

2018 is going to be a BIG year. In fact, it’s shaping up to be one of our most impactful years yet.

But before we forge ahead, first I want to take a moment to pause and reflect. We wouldn’t be able to help protect so many people from deadly mosquitoes without support from our Nothing But Nets community.

We live in a world where almost 430,000 people die annually from a preventable, mosquito-borne disease called malaria. Children, pregnant women, and refugees are at highest risk for contracting this disease. But there is no excuse, considering that it is 100% preventable.

While sympathizing with those who have contracted or are at high risk for contracting malaria is important, I believe it is our responsibility as human beings to take a more active role in the fight against it.

I, for one, refuse to be idle while over a million people succumb to this preventable disease each year.

Nothing But Nets announced that the campaign’s efforts to fight malaria by delivering long-lasting, insecticide-treated nets (bed nets) to children and families throughout Africa were highlighted at today’s White House Malaria Summit hosted by President George Bush and First Lady Laura Bush.
